8BitDo has unveiled a new version of its Ultimate C wired Xbox controller, reduced by 20% in size and 10% in weight. The new product, called Ultimate Mini, retains all the basic functions of full-size controllers, including triggers and buttons.
Although the 8BitDo Ultimate Mini is marketed as a controller for kids and teens, it is also suitable for gamers with small hands who find standard controllers too big and heavy. The device weighs just 189.6 grams, according to The Verge, which is significantly less than the weight of the Xbox Series S and X controllers (287 grams) and more than half the weight of the original “The Duke” controller (550 grams).
The 8BitDo Ultimate Mini retains the familiar button and joystick layout of standard Xbox controllers, but everything is placed closer together. The device uses anti-drift (Hall effect) magnetic joysticks, as well as rear-mounted triggers. In addition, the controller is equipped with slightly smaller buttons on the top panel.
One of the noticeable features of the new product is the translucent body, available in white, pink and green colors. Around each joystick is a ring of LEDs called the Fire Ring. It can glow in different colors, respond to button presses, change colors in a cycle, or follow the movements of the joysticks.
The controller is compatible with Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X, as well as computers running Windows 10 or 11. The device is connected only via a wire, which also helped reduce its weight due to the lack of batteries. However, parents whose children sometimes throw controllers in a fit of emotion should take into account that a wired gamepad does not have a detachable cable, and this may increase the risk of damage. The controller is already available for purchase in the US through Amazon and the 8BitDo online store for $35.
