In a letter sent to Attorney General Rob Bonta on Thursday, December 12, Meta✴ said that allowing OpenAI to become a for-profit company would set a dangerous precedent: startups would be able to take advantage of nonprofit status until they are ready to go public. profitability.

«OpenAI’s actions could have seismic consequences for Silicon Valley. If OpenAI’s new business model is successful, non-profit investors will receive the same returns as those who traditionally invest in for-profit companies, but will also benefit from government-provided tax write-offs,” Meta✴ said in the letter.

The day before, OpenAI asked a federal judge in California to reject Elon Musk’s request to stop the reorganization of the ChatGPT developer into a commercial company. Last August, Musk sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, saying they violated the agreement by putting profit before the public good when developing artificial intelligence.

Meta✴ said it supports Musk’s desire to represent the public’s interests in deciding whether OpenAI will be allowed to become a commercial company. Musk was at the origins of OpenAI, but subsequently left the project and launched his own AI-related startup xAI.
