The American company QuantumScape announced the completion of the installation of an advanced and unparalleled line for the production of ceramic separators for commercial solid-state lithium batteries. The Cobra line is designed to significantly increase production of the company’s proprietary battery samples, which will begin shipping in 2025. The mass production of solid-state batteries is just around the corner.
The development of the Cobra line, its production, installation and commissioning were carried out entirely by QuantumScape. Earlier this year, the company began shipping QSE-5 5Ah solid-state cells to customers. The launch of the new line will speed up the production of cell elements and batteries themselves. Although not yet in commercial production, QuantumScape is likely to be the first company to commercially produce solid-state batteries. Let us recall that CATL intends to master only small-scale production of such batteries by 2027.
Deliveries of QSE-5 samples in 2025 will be carried out to manufacturers of electric vehicles. QSE-5 cells have impressive characteristics: a specific capacity of 301 Wh/kg or 844 Wh/L and the ability to charge from 10 to 80% in just 12 minutes. In addition, they are fireproof and can operate over an extended temperature range. And during testing, the QuantumScape solid-state battery withstood 483 thousand kilometers with minimal wear.
QuantumScape is financially supported by Volkswagen and one of Bill Gates’ foundations. These companies and funds supported QuantumScape for 10 years before it went public, which indicates the high prospects of the company and its products.
