Bees did not discourage Meta from wanting to power its servers from a nuclear reactor

Meta✴ Platforms has confirmed its intention to use nuclear energy to power its data centers in the United States. According to the source, the company is ready to accept a proposal for cooperation from a nuclear energy company to add 1 to 4 gigawatts of energy to its existing capacity by the beginning of the next decade.

The report said that Meta✴ continues to seek partners with experience in either “small modular reactors (SMRs) or larger nuclear reactors.” It is noted that the company is “geographically independent” regarding the location of potential nuclear facilities. Earlier this year, Meta✴ already planned to build a “nuclear” data center in the United States, but this project had to be abandoned due to the fact that a rare species of bees lives in the area of the potential nuclear facility construction.

«As innovation brings significant technological advances across all sectors and supports economic growth, we believe nuclear power can help provide reliable baseload power to support the growing demands of the electrical grids that power our data centers (the physical infrastructure that powers the Meta✴ platforms) , as well as their surrounding communities,” the company said in a statement.

Meta✴ isn’t the only major tech company looking to use nuclear power to further its artificial intelligence ambitions. Not long ago, Google announced the signing of an agreement under which several reactors will be built in the United States to produce 500 megawatts of energy. Earlier this year, Microsoft said it wanted to revive a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania to spur the development of AI technology.
