Firaxis: new era system in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will help solve one of the main problems of the series

The creative director of the global strategy Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, Ed Beach, in an interview with Edge magazine, spoke about how the new era mechanics in the game will help solve one of the main problems of the entire series.

Let us remind you that in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII there are only three eras (antiquity, the age of discovery, modernity), and each offers its own set of civilizations: when changing an era, the player chooses a new people that will lead to prosperity.

According to Beach, the new era mechanics in Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will help solve one of the main problems of the franchise – that users do not finish their games, abandoning the game halfway through.

«The number one problem that the era system solves for us is it helps us get to the end of the game and not feel overwhelmed with micromanagement and the number of decisions during each turn,” Beach explained.

The game will have the ability to raft rivers – for the first time in the series

At the same time, the team at Firaxis Games was initially not sure that the proposed changes to the era system would work properly, but Beach insisted that it was worth a try anyway.

The data received from the design and quality control departments is encouraging: “I’m getting a lot more reports that [testers] are getting to the end of the game, and the games are having interesting endings.”

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will be released on February 11, 2025 on Steam (PC, Mac, Linux), Epic Games Store (PC), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. In October, the developers presented system requirements.
