“Crisis” situation: the source code of Crysis 3 fell into the hands of hackers

Information has appeared on the Internet that a certain “video game researcher” with the nickname SvenTek_667 managed to obtain the source code of the original version of Crysis 3. The original version of the shooter, we recall, was released in 2013, the Remastered version – in 2021.

Information about the leak appeared on the microblog VXUG (aka vx-underground), an educational web resource that collects information about all malicious programs. The site’s authors have one of the largest online repositories of malware at their disposal. Using their X account, specialists from vx-underground regularly notify about new facts of cybersecurity violations and check them. The leak of the Crysis 3 source code has become another reason for publication. In fact, the archive with the “sources” was published back in 2020 by the hacker group Egregor, but access to its contents was only now gained.

Currently, developers from Crytek are developing the PvPvE shooter Hunt: Showdown, releasing sometimes controversial updates for it. The announcement of the fourth part of Crysis took place back in January 2022, but since then there has been virtually no information about the shooter.

The leak of the Crysis 3 source code could theoretically provide invaluable assistance to the creators of modifications, but whether they will release their works for an 11-year-old shooter with practically “zero” online on Steam (either the original version or the Remastered) is an open question. In addition, the use of blatantly stolen data, even for creative purposes, can have certain consequences with due interest from the Crytek legal department.
