The microblogging platform Threads, created by Meta✴ as an alternative to the social network X (formerly Twitter), increased its user base by more than 35 million in November. For almost three months, the platform registered over a million new accounts daily.
Compared to its closest competitors, Threads continues to demonstrate impressive growth dynamics. As Meta✴ spokesman Alec Booker told The Verge in an email: “More than a million users per day have been registered for three months now.” As a result, Threads registered 35 million new accounts in November 2024 alone, making it one of the fastest growing social networks in the world.
According to data published by Axios, 20 million accounts were registered after November 14, and this is in addition to the 15 million users who joined Threads two weeks earlier. This sharp increase in activity demonstrates the success of Meta✴ in promoting Threads, especially against the backdrop of the steady growth in popularity of social networks.
Social network Bluesky, Threads’ main competitor, also showed noticeable results. In early November, the platform’s audience reached 15 million users, and in the following days it increased by approximately a million participants daily. Currently, the total number of Bluesky users has exceeded 22 million, but its growth rate remains lower than that of Threads.
However, Meta✴ is actively responding to the successes of competitors, adapting Threads functionality to the needs of users. Instagram✴ CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed that several recent changes to the platform were partly due to Bluesky’s rise in popularity. Key updates include a custom subscription feed, as well as testing a feature that allows users to set a feed that only displays posts from subscriptions as the main feed in the Threads app.
