Cinemas around the world are switching from projectors to LED screens. TrendForce estimates that the global long-term market capacity of this market will be around 30,000 units, and the current penetration rate of LED cinema screens is only 0.5%, indicating the high potential of the technology. With government support, Chinese LED screen companies are actively promoting their products on the global market.
In China alone, more than 50 cinemas with LED screens are currently open, of which 30 will open in 2024. Now, Chinese companies such as China Film Global Technology Limited (CFGDC), HUAXIA LEYARD, QSTECH, Unilumin and LOPU have begun aggressively expanding their LED cinema screens into the global market. TrendForce estimates that 160 Chinese-made LED screens will be installed in cinemas around the world this year.
Thus, China Film Group Corporation (CFGC) recently announced that a new cinema in the German city of Dinkelsbühl purchased 10 sets of CINITY LED projection systems from CFGDC. CINITY LED is a cinema LED screen jointly developed by AOTO and CFGDC. It supports 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, complies with the DCI-P3 color space standard and provides a maximum brightness for 2D content of 300 cd/m² and a maximum brightness for one eye for 3D content of 60 cd/m².
In Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea, Samsung and LG currently dominate the LED cinema screen market. However, thanks to the active efforts of Chinese companies, their solutions are actively entering the global market and entering into competition with international players. For example, Chinese LEYARD products have already been installed and used in more than 20 cinemas outside of China, including Alcazar Cinema in France, CGV Buena Park in the USA and Odeon Multicines in Spain.
In July this year, Rio-tech, in collaboration with Timewaying, announced that Europe’s first 10m HeyLED 2K LED screen had been installed at the Inspire Cinema in Romania. The screen is Hollywood DCI certified and boasts high brightness, excellent contrast and wide dynamic range. The use of such a screen eliminates the need for projectors and specialized projection rooms. It is also reported that HeyLED screens have been installed in newly opened cinemas in Europe, America and the Middle East since their launch.
LOPU has released a fully transparent LED screen for cinemas, which has received interest from numerous overseas customers interested in diversifying their cinema equipment. Cineappo notes the great interest of foreign film industry operators in its VLED screens for cinemas. Cineappo is confident that they will bring revolutionary changes to film distribution.
Thanks to the efforts of Chinese companies, Chinese-made LED movie screens are expanding beyond the domestic market to the wider world stage.
