The desire of the American authorities to separate the Chrome browser from Google is no longer a secret, but this week it managed to acquire a legally significant form. According to Reuters, US prosecutors called on the court to persuade Alphabet to take appropriate action. The defendant has the opportunity to offer options until the end of this year, and the trial in this case will take place in April next year.
The US Department of Justice requires Google to sell the Chrome browser, as well as create conditions for providing competitors with data and search history of its users. According to the prosecution, such steps will help break up Google’s monopoly in the search engine industry and improve competition in the market. Now, according to some estimates, Google controls approximately 90% of the Internet search engine market.
According to the prosecution, Google’s illegal behavior has so far prevented new market players from entering it using their innovations, since the company controlled the browser distribution channels through the company’s application store. The US Department of Justice wants to ban Google from returning to the Internet browser market over the next five years. Moreover, if the proposed measures to restore fair competition do not have an effect, Google will have to sell the Android operating system. The prosecution also insists on prohibiting Google from buying companies working in the field of search engines, artificial intelligence or advanced advertising technologies.
The US Department of Justice and a coalition of states are insisting on ending Google’s exclusive agreements with Apple and other manufacturers of smartphones and tablets, under the terms of which Google becomes the default search engine for users of these devices. Google will be able to present its proposals in December of this year, and the court hearing will take place in April next year, if the rise to power of Donald Trump by then does not affect the course of the case.
