Apple Intelligence has become the source of absurd, funny and scary notification summaries

IPhone, iPad and Mac, with the introduction of Apple Intelligence, now have a unique AI-powered Notification Summary feature that creates notification summaries for the owner. Apple’s artificial intelligence is trying its best to summarize and systematize everything it can reach. Sometimes he does it well. But, according to numerous researchers, more often “it’s just funny.”

Owners of Apple devices who have tested the latest AI functions of Apple Intelligence note that sometimes the result of their activities is quite useful. For example, AI can process Apple Home notifications and bring them into a form that is easy to understand – the message “Garage status has changed several times; recently closed” is much more informative than dozens of similar messages about the opening/closing of garage doors. The owner will not have to look into Apple Home or the camera in the garage again, although there is still some possibility that the AI is hallucinating.

Researchers report that problems arise when Apple Intelligence tries to summarize text messages, emails and Slack notifications. Too often, Apple’s AI “misses the very essence of dialogue in the chaos of human communication.” Added to this are the model’s problems with understanding the relevant context, after which the result can only cause laughter and not always cheerful ones.

The Verge columnist Wes Davis said he was extremely surprised when he saw an invitation from the Writers Guild of America on his iPhone to “take a look at his old ass.” Moreover, this message was adjacent to information about Apple’s quarterly reporting.

A puppy approaching the door of The Verge editor-in-chief’s house at night triggered an AI notification that the house was surrounded on all sides by crowds of people – at the front door, at the back door, and even in the driveway.

Fellow The Verge writer Alex Heath received a similar message about an attempted break-in by ten or more people through the front door. Heath assured readers that he was fine and no one had broken into his house, although he had a few unpleasant moments after reading the AI message.

What should an iPhone owner think after receiving the following message from AI: “Microsoft is eliminating gender classification. Experian alerts about new sex offender. TurboTax reminds you to file by October 31st”? Apparently, the artificial intelligence came across a very inconvenient set of information for summarizing.

In the following example, Apple Intelligence is very dissatisfied with a certain movie and a button, but resolutely refuses to tell what kind of movie it is and where the button is (perhaps we are talking about “The Adventures of Electronics,” although it is doubtful that the AI got to the Soviet film of 1979).

It must be admitted that Apple Intelligence notifications have not become the most popular feature to date. But they definitely added a lot of stress to owners of Apple devices. According to Davis, AI notifications “are a terrible, constant intrusion that my attention-deficit brain hates anyway.” It looks like there needs to be a button that can be used to turn off all the AI at once in order to make sure that the world around us is real.
