Apple may update all Macs with M4 series processors. The company has previously come close to completely revamping its Mac lineup several times, but over the past 10 years it has never managed to cover all devices. Last week, Apple released the MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini with M4 chips. If its plans don’t change, MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro will be equipped with these chips by mid-2025. This will be the first complete update to the Mac line since 2013.

The updated Mac models not only get new processors, but also significant hardware improvements: an increased number of faster Thunderbolt 5 ports, a display option with nano-texture glass to reduce glare, and an improved Center Stage camera that automatically keeps you centered. frame during video calls. According to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the MacBook Air with M4 is scheduled for release in the spring of 2025, and the Mac Studio and Mac Pro for mid-year. If the deadlines are met, Apple will make the latest technology available to users across its entire Mac line at the same time for the first time in a long time.

A complete update of all Mac devices is quite rare. One of the few examples of such an upgrade was the transition to M1, when almost all models, with the exception of the Mac Pro, were equipped with new processors within 18 months. The transition to M2 was not complete either: the cycle began with updates to the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro at WWDC22, continued with the release of the Mac mini and MacBook Pro in January 2023, and ended with the release of Mac Studio and Mac Pro at WWDC23. However, the iMac remained without an update.

Apple also updated most Mac models in 2019. The beginning of the year was marked by the release of new iMacs, then updated versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro were introduced in the summer, and by the end of the year a completely new 16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac Pro appeared. However, the cycle remained unfinished: the iMac Pro and Mac mini never received the update. Even with the Mac mini refresh at the end of 2018, the lack of a new iMac Pro prevented the cycle from ending completely.

The last time the entire Mac line was updated in one year was in 2013. Then the company introduced the cylindrical Mac Pro and released updated versions of the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac mini. This update cycle has been an exception over the past 10 years, as the company has never fully updated all devices since then. However, if the rumors are true, it will be the first time since 2013 that every Mac will be equipped with the latest processor, which would be a significant achievement from both a technological and marketing point of view.
