Google has released an update for the Chrome browser aimed at improving memory performance and optimizing tab usage. New features have been added to help users better manage resource-consuming tabs. One of the main innovations was “Notifications about performance problems”, as well as improvements to the already existing Memory Saver mode.
The new notification system alerts the user if one of the tabs begins to consume more resources than necessary. In this case, as The Verge writes, a small icon in the form of a speedometer appears next to the user’s avatar in the toolbar. By clicking on it, you can see a list of tabs that are causing the problem and select one of the action options – “Reject” or “Fix Now”.
In addition to notifications, the Memory Saver mode, which was introduced in Chrome in 2022, has also been updated. This mode automatically freezes inactive tabs to free up computer resources. As Google spokesman Scott Westover confirmed in a message to The Verge, Memory Saver modes are now called “Moderate”, “Balanced” and “Maximum”. As the names suggest, each mode determines the degree of optimization – from more lenient resource management to the fastest possible disabling of unused tabs.
Moderate mode automatically analyzes system needs and manages tabs, Balanced takes into account both system needs and user habits, and Maximum deactivates tabs immediately after you stop using them. These settings allow you to flexibly control the operation of the browser depending on preferences and the current load on the computer.
To enable the new features, you need to open the Chrome menu, go to Settings and select the Performance tab. There you can enable the option to notify about performance problems and configure the Memory Saver mode.
