“Looking forward to Starfield 2”: Skyrim lead designer explains why Bethesda’s space RPG sequel “will be a damn cool game”

The space role-playing game Starfield, Bethesda’s first project on new intellectual property in 25 years, did not live up to the expectations of many, but the sequel certainly will not let you down, says an ex-employee of Bethesda Game Studios.

Bruce Nesmith, former design director of Bethesda Game Studios and lead designer of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, shared his thoughts about the conditional Starfield 2 in an interview with VideoGamer.

According to Nesmith, while Fallout and The Elder Scrolls have decades of history and mistakes behind them for developers to learn from, the Starfield universe had to be created almost from scratch.

«When we made Skyrim, we had a huge advantage in the form of Oblivion, and before that Morrowind. We only needed to further improve [the existing] and add new things. There was no need to start from scratch,” Nesmith recalls.

As was the case with the first Mass Effect and Assassin’s Creed, in Starfield, according to Nesmith, there are “glimmers of greatness,” while the franchise realizes its potential only in the second or third parts.

«I’m looking forward to Starfield 2. I think it’s going to be a damn cool game because it’s going to take a lot of the things that people are talking about right now… [The sequel] is going to take what’s there and add a lot of new things and fix a lot of problems,” says Nesmith.

Starfield was released last September on PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Xbox Series X and S, and a year later received the Shattered Space expansion. On Valve’s service, the base game has “mixed” reviews, while the add-on has “mostly negative” reviews.
