In the latest Windows 11 update, Microsoft added a new feature – an on-screen keyboard optimized for gamepad control. The innovation, currently available in test mode, will make life easier for owners of portable gaming PCs and those who like to play on the couch.
The latest Windows 11 Preview Build 22631 adds support for gamepad input. The new Gamepad Keyboard feature offers an updated layout for the on-screen keyboard, making it easier to type using sticks and buttons. The keyboard also includes touch controls and a vertical design that takes up about a fifth of the screen. According to the Windows Insider team, the feature is being rolled out gradually, so it won’t be available to all users right away.
Other new features added in this build of Windows 11 include an update to notifications so you can turn them off, improved access to the Phone Link app right from the Start menu, and the ability to repurpose the Copilot key to perform other tasks, such as using the button as a calling search or opening other applications if they are in signed MSIX packages.
The rest of the changes in this update mainly concern minor bug fixes and interface improvements aimed at improving the usability of Windows 11. However, it is the Gamepad Keyboard feature that is considered the most important innovation in this build.
It is emphasized that the addition of a gamepad keyboard will have the greatest impact on users of Windows-based portable gaming PCs such as the Lenovo Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally. This will also be useful for Steam Deck owners who, for some reason, prefer to use Windows instead of SteamOS.
