YouTube has announced changes for short videos. Starting October 15, content creators will be able to upload videos in Shorts format up to three minutes long. A “fewer Shorts” option will also be added, which will allow you to control the number of short videos in users’ feeds.
According to TheVerge, this change was a response to numerous requests from users for whom one minute was not enough to express their ideas in short videos. Interestingly, TikTok, a YouTube competitor, already allows you to create videos up to 10 minutes in length, having continuously increased the limit since the launch of its platform.
In addition to increasing video length, YouTube has also introduced a new templates feature that will allow content creators to use pre-made formats from other Shorts. For example, creators will be able to sync their clips with popular audio tracks from other videos. This is reminiscent of TikTok’s existing option, which allows you to select preset video styles and customize them to your liking. Instagram✴ Reels also has a similar feature. On YouTube, templates will be accessed through the “Remix” button.
It is worth noting that, despite the active promotion of short videos, YouTube does not forget about its classic format. The company recognizes that some users prefer the long-form videos that the platform has become famous for. Therefore, the appearance of a new option “Show fewer Shorts” was also announced, which will temporarily reduce the number of short videos in the user’s recommendations feed.
