In anticipation of the very soon release, Silent Hill 2 from the Polish studio Bloober Team, a remake of the cult psychological horror of the same name by Konami, received the first ratings from Western critics.
Silent Hill 2 is considered one of the most important games of the PS2 era, and fans were worried that Bloober Team with their track record (Layers of Fear, Blair Witch, The Medium) would spoil the unique original, but it seems that it turned out okay.
At the time of publication of the material, Silent Hill 2 had about 50 reviews on Metacritic with an average rating of 87-88% (86% on Opencritic). For comparison, the PS2 version of the original game in 2001 earned 89% on the aggregator.
Reviewers raved about the faithfully replicated (and neatly expanded) Silent Hill 2 experience, with new graphics and gameplay, redesigned bosses, thick atmosphere, sound design, and new endings.
The disadvantages included the dominance of battles, due to which battles become boring by the end of the game, the excessive length of some sections, sometimes unsuccessful animations, the lack of a Born from a Wish script and technical roughness.
Critics agree that Bloober has not lost face. Despite everyone’s skepticism, the remake of Silent Hill 2 turned out to be an excellent game for exploring one of the most important pages in the history of the genre.
Silent Hill 2 will be released on October 8 on PC (Steam) and PS5, but owners of the enhanced edition will have access two days earlier. To mark the upcoming release, Konami also unveiled a new three-minute trailer (attached above).
