With the arrival of autumn, memory began to rapidly fall in price – DRAM and NAND chips lost 10–20% in price

Contract prices for DRAM and NAND in September showed a significant decrease – this was due to low demand for PCs and other consumer electronics. This was reported by the Korean resource The Elec.

Prices for DDR4 8Gb 1Gx8 chips in September 2024 fell by 17.07% and stopped at $1.7, analysts at DRAMeXchange noted. Since October last year, prices for DRAM, after a protracted peak, have shown a steady increase, but already in August of this year they showed a decrease for the first time – then it amounted to 2.38%.

The collapse in memory prices was not limited to the DRAM segment alone. Over the same period of time, prices for 128Gb 16Gx8 MLC chips also showed a noticeable decrease – it amounted to 11.44%. PC manufacturers still have high levels of inventory, which means that demand for their products has not yet recovered, says TrendForce, the company that owns DRAMeXchange. In the third quarter of 2024, PC shipments grew by 4.4%, which is below analysts’ forecasts. At the same time, the stocks include mainly DDR4 memory, and not the newer DDR5.
