Miocrosoft Paint has added AI fill and erase functions, just like Photoshop

Microsoft has introduced new generative AI-based features for the Paint and Photos apps on AI-powered Copilot Plus PCs. The new features are intended for image editing and act as a kind of analogues of the functions that already exist in Adobe Photoshop.

Both tools use an adjustable brush to help you point out areas of the image to edit. Generative Erase removes unwanted elements from images, just like Magic Eraser does on Google Pixel phones. Generative Fill, on the other hand, adds new elements to images – the user needs to create a text query and choose where to place them. The tool of the same name in Photoshop works in a similar way.

The basis for the new features is laid by the Paint Cocreator tool, announced for Copilot Plus PC computers this year – it is designed to generate images using text queries and serving as sample sketches. The diffusion model that ensures the functionality has received an update, which has improved the quality and speed of work, and also introduced “built-in moderation” that prevents abuse.

The Generative Erase tool is also available in the Photos app, along with Super-Resolution, which uses local AI to scale up blurry or pixelated images. The degree of image magnification can be adjusted using the slider – it can be eight times. This matches the scaling capabilities of the Canva platform and doubles the 4x zoom capabilities of Super Resolution in Adobe Lightroom. The function is available for free and works quite quickly, increasing the resolution of images to 4K “in a matter of seconds,” Microsoft says.
