Baldur’s Gate 3 director hinted at when Larian’s next game will be released, but then took it back

The head of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, during the SEA Game Awards 2024 ceremony and a subsequent interview with IGN, spoke about working on the team’s next game after Baldur’s Gate 3.

Accepting a special award on stage at the SEA Game Awards 2024, Vincke unexpectedly declared: “We need to work hard on the next game so that we can be back here in five years.”

However, Vincke urges people not to accept their words as confirmation of the release of the new Larian game in 2029. In an interview with IGN after the award, the developer emphasized that “it was just a joke.”

«I knew you’d be hooked on this. It was just a joke. Don’t know. We will release it when it is ready. These are big games and they take time, so don’t put us in a time frame,” Vincke asked.

Vincke did not share the details of the next Larian game, but spoke about the approach to development: “It should be something that you are proud to show to your friends and that you yourself want to play. This is the core. If it’s there, we’ll be fine.”

«The expectations are incredibly high, so I told the team: listen to your gut and let’s see what happens. Failure is normal. They have always been part of the DNA of our studio and creative process. We must remember this,” says Vincke.

Larian is working on two major RPGs. In an August interview with PC Gamer, Vincke argued that the studio already knows “what it wants from the gameplay systems, how to develop them, how to make new elements… and all these [plans] are big.”
