Meta✴ has introduced a new virtual reality headset, Quest 3S. Priced from $299, the new product is something between the Quest 2 and Quest 3 VR headset models.
According to The Verge, the Quest 3S headset offers the same mixed reality and virtual reality features, as well as the same level of performance as the Quest 3 model. The new product is based on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor as its predecessor. This means the Quest 3S will be able to run the same games and applications. The Quest 3S comes with a pair of Touch Plus controllers, just like the Quest 3. However, the Quest 3S has a claimed battery life of 2.5 hours versus the Quest 3’s 2.2 hours.
Still, the new product is somewhat different from the Quest 3. For example, it is a little larger and offers a different arrangement of sensors on the front panel. Quest 3S does not have a depth sensor. Perhaps the most obvious difference between the Quest 3S and the Quest 3 is the resolution of the displays. Quest 3S displays a picture of 1832 × 1920 pixels for each eye (the same resolution as the Quest 2 VR headset). The Quest 3 has 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye. Additionally, the Quest 3S has a narrower viewing angle.
Quest 3S is equipped with a physical Action Button, which allows you to see the surrounding area ahead through the visor if necessary. The Quest 3 and Quest Pro models also have this feature. It is enabled through software settings and allows you to double-tap the visor to see the area in front of the user.
Pre-orders for the Quest 3S VR headset are being accepted starting today. Open sales of the device will begin on October 15. Meta✴ is also offering Quest 3S and Quest 3 gaming bundles with a copy of the VR game Batman: Arkham Shadow, which will be released on October 22.
The Quest 3S version with 128 GB of permanent memory is priced at $299.99, the version with 256 GB of permanent memory is priced at $399.99, and in the maximum configuration with 512 GB of permanent memory, the new product is offered for $499.99. Let us remember that at the start of sales last year, the version of the Quest 3 VR headset with 512 GB of permanent memory was priced at $649.99. The company now plans to reduce the price of the Quest 3 with 128 GB of storage from the original $499.99 to $429.99. In addition, with the release of the Quest 3S, the manufacturer is also going to stop selling the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. The remainder of these devices are planned to be sold before the end of this year.
