Microsoft: there will be no mass deployment of Windows 11 24H2 in October

A recent post on the Microsoft forum led many media outlets to believe that the Windows 11 24H2 update could be rolled out early next month to all users, but the Redmond company later clarified that it has no such plans, TechSpot reports.

Confusion arose earlier this week when a Microsoft spokesperson published a forum post saying that the next “Windows 11 annual feature update release” would be available to all users along with the monthly security update release on October 8th. The message also said that users can install the update as early as September 24 by changing the Windows Update settings on their PCs.

The Ghacks portal was the first to report this news, taking the information as an official announcement of the general deployment of Windows 11 24H2. The story picked up steam over the next few days, with many tech blogs and news outlets, including 3DNews, reporting that the next big Windows 11 update is just around the corner.

However, on Wednesday, Microsoft clarified that it will only release “regular monthly service updates” on October 8, and not Windows 11 24H2. The company has not said when it plans to release 24H2. So users who were hoping for a fresh OS update will have to wait at least a few more weeks to get the latest AI features on their systems.

It’s worth noting that Windows 11 24H2 made its official debut earlier this year with the release of the Surface Laptop and the next-generation Surface Pro tablet. The new version of the OS is also available on Copilot Plus PC laptops, which currently only include laptops based on Qualcomm Snapdragon X processors. Existing AMD Strix Point computers and upcoming Intel Lunar Lake machines will also become part of the Copilot Plus PC ecosystem, but not immediately .

Windows 11 24H2 contains several AI features, including the controversial Windows Recall, which Microsoft withdrew due to serious privacy and security concerns. Another notable AI feature included in Windows 11 24H2 is a new version of the Copilot app with support for the Enterprise Data Protection security tool, which is intended to be installed on computers running Windows 11 Enterprise, and not on all devices with compatible versions of the OS.
