The creator of Flappy Bird disowned the suspicious relaunch of the cult mobile game

Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen, known as the creator of the mobile arcade Flappy Bird, broke his long-term silence on social networks to comment on the recent announcement of the restart of the project.

Let’s remember that the “passionate team of Flappy Bird fans” from the Flappy Bird Foundation last week announced the purchase of the rights to the game from Gametech Holdings, which took over the trademark after Nguyen.

As noted shortly after the announcement, Gametech Holdings did not become the owner of Flappy Bird as a result of a deal with Nguyen. The company pointed out to the American regulator that the trademark was abandoned and then appropriated it for free.

In his first tweet in seven years, Nguyen confirmed fans’ fears: “No, I have nothing to do with their game. I didn’t sell anything. I am also not a supporter of [cryptocurrency].”

The connection between the future relaunch of Flappy Bird and crypto was discovered on the official website of the project (the page is already hidden, but available in the Internet archive): there were mentions of Web3, the TON cryptocurrency and the Solana blockchain platform.

The head of the Flappy Bird Foundation turned out to be designer Michael Roberts, who also heads 1208 Productions, a Web3 pioneer company associated with various cryptocurrency and NFT projects.

The release of the reborn Flappy Bird from the Flappy Bird Foundation is expected before the end of autumn in web browsers and throughout 2025 in versions for iOS and Android. Among other things, the restart will offer new modes and characters.
