Google will launch a new AI assistant “Ask Photos” for search

Google has begun testing a new AI-powered “Ask Photos” feature that lets you ask questions about photos and get answers based on their content. The search function in the Google Photos app will also be updated, The Verge reports, allowing you to search for images in a more intuitive way.

Ask Photos uses an AI assistant called Gemini that analyzes photos and provides answers along with showing images that match the query. This will make it much easier to find information about past events and help users remember important moments preserved in their photos. Google notes that you can also use this feature to perform various tasks, such as summarizing recent trips or choosing the best family photos for a shared album.

Google has also improved traditional image search in the Google Photos app, which is now called classic search. Users will be able to search for photos using natural language, for example by entering queries like “Alice and I laughing.” For convenience, the search will also be ordered by date or relevance. The feature will be available in English for both Android and iOS for now, with support for other languages coming in the next few weeks.

In preparation for these changes, the Library tab has been replaced with a new Collection page, which should make it easier to find photos and videos. Google promises that intuitive language search will help users find specific images without having to scroll through thousands of pictures or filter by location.
