The head of Hero Games, Daniel Wu, in an interview with Bloomberg, spoke about the new successes of the fantasy action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong and the future plans of its developers from the Chinese studio Game Science.
It’s worth noting that Hero Games is Game Science’s largest outside investor. In 2017, the company bought a 20% stake in the developers for 60 million yuan ($8.5 million), and now the Chinese studio is valued at several billion.
According to Wu, a significant portion of Black Myth: Wukong’s budget—it’s estimated at $70 million, which is unheard of for a Chinese project—came from Hero Games. Development of the game took six years.
Since the release of Black Myth: Wukong, it has already earned more than $700 million and broken several single-player game records. Sales in three days exceeded 10 million copies, and according to the results of the first two weeks, as it turned out, the figure reached 18 million.
According to Wu, Black Myth: Wukong is capable of reaching 30 million copies sold. A major addition to the main game, currently in development, should help with this. You won’t have to wait six years for it.
Insider Lunatic Ignus recently spoke about the fact that Black Myth: Wukong is waiting for an addon (even two). According to him, plans are also in the works for a sequel, codenamed Black Myth: Jiang Ziya.
Black Myth: Wukong was released on August 20 on PC (Steam, EGS, WePlay) and PS5, but the version for Xbox Series X and S is delayed – either due to technical problems, or because of Game Science’s behind-the-scenes deal with Sony.
