According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the next versions of Mac Mini computers will lack USB Type-A interfaces. If this is indeed the case, then the Mac Mini’s design will undergo the most significant changes in the last 14 years, as it has essentially remained unchanged since 2010 (with the exception of 2011, when the DVD drive was removed from the design).

According to Gurman’s sources, the new Mac Mini will receive Apple’s proprietary M4 processor and will be equipped with a variety of interfaces, including five USB Type-C ports (two in the front and three in the back), an Ethernet connector, HDMI and a headset jack. It is also noted that the new Mac Mini will most likely use an internal power supply, which is not so bad for a device the size of an Apple TV set-top box.

The move away from USB Type-A interfaces in the Mac Mini is expected, as similar work has already been done on other Apple devices. However, this approach may be problematic for some users, since many computer accessories, such as wireless mouse adapters, still connect via USB Type-A.

We also note that for the first time, the Mac Mini design will include a front panel with any interfaces. At the same time, Gurman noted that the Mac Mini Pro with the Apple M4 chip will have five USB Type-C ports. Whether the base version of the Mac Mini will be equipped with five USB Type-C ports is currently unknown. Historically, the base Mac Mini has had fewer interfaces available than the Pro version.
