The South Korean company SK hynix is the largest supplier of HBM memory; in terms of net profit, it is second only to Samsung Electronics among its compatriots, and therefore is interested in maintaining technological leadership in this area. Representatives from SK hynix recently admitted that the company intends to increase HBM productivity by 30 times from the current level.

The corresponding statement, as noted by Business Korea, was made this week by the company’s vice president, Ryu Seong-su, who spoke at an industry forum in the South Korean capital. SK hynix is going to develop memory of the HBM family, which could outperform existing models by 30 times in terms of performance. “We are going to develop products that will be 20 or 30 times faster than the current HBM, focusing on bringing differentiated products to market,” explained Ryu Sung-soo.

Companies that are part of the so-called “magnificent seven” (Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, Nvidia, Meta✴ Platforms and Tesla) often ask SK hynix to tailor the supplied HBM memory to their needs. To meet these demands, SK hynix requires a huge amount of engineering resources, according to a company representative, but it is going to develop in this direction. Already within the HBM4 family, this manufacturer intends to offer customers memory options tailored to their needs. At the same time, SK hynix strives to independently form industry standards in this area, and not follow solutions proposed by other companies. Memory customization will become a significant factor changing the course of development of the entire semiconductor industry, according to SK hynix.
