Nvidia has indeed introduced a new version of the GeForce RTX 4070 video card, equipped with GDDR6 memory instead of GDDR6X. Rumors about a new version of the RTX 4070 have been circulating for some time. The manufacturer claims that it provides “similar” levels of performance compared to the original version.
After Nvidia introduced the GeForce RTX 4070 Super model based on the more powerful AD104-350 processor with 7168 CUDA cores in January of this year, it did not remove the original RTX 4070 model based on the AD104-250 GPU with 5888 CUDA cores from store shelves. Today the company introduced a new version of the original model.
The only difference between the new version of the GeForce RTX 4070 is that it is equipped with GDDR6 memory instead of the faster GDDR6X. GDDR6 has a data transfer rate of 20 Gbps per pin and in a volume of 12 GB in the GeForce RTX 4070 provides a throughput of 480 GB/s. In turn, the GDDR6X memory in the same card has a speed of 21 Gbps per pin and provides a bandwidth of 504 GB/s (that is, 5% more).
The GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory also uses the AD104-251 graphics processor instead of the AD104-250, which has exactly the same characteristics as its predecessor: 5888 CUDA cores, frequency from 1920 to 2475 MHz, support for a 192-bit memory bus. The power consumption of the video card has also not changed and is the same 200 W.
Nvidia did not disclose the cost of the GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory. According to the VideoCardz portal, it will be similar to the original model with GDDR6X memory, that is, $549.
Some Nvidia partners have already presented their versions of the GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory, however, none of them explicitly indicate in their advertising materials that they use slower memory. Therefore, when purchasing a GeForce RTX 4070, it is recommended to pay attention to the characteristics indicated on the packaging of the video card.
On its official website, Nvidia says it has released the GeForce RTX 4070 with GDDR6 memory to improve the supply and availability of this graphics card model. It is unclear from the company’s statement whether the original RTX 4070 with GDDR6X memory will continue to be produced.
