Apple plans to release new AirPods 4, which will replace the existing AirPods 2 and AirPods 3. The new headphones are expected to be available in two variants. The mid-level model will receive active noise cancellation, while the basic version, as reported by 9to5Mac, will remain without this function.
Apple currently offers AirPods 2, which were launched in early 2019 and continue to be an affordable option for users. These headphones have a traditional AirPods design and often sell for under $90, making them an attractive choice for many buyers. Despite the lack of modern features, AirPods 2 are still a simple and convenient option for connecting to your iPhone.
AirPods 3 went on sale in October 2021 and offered a number of improvements, including support for spatial audio, sensors on the earbuds, and the ability to charge through the Apple Watch. AirPods 3 started selling for $179, while AirPods 2 continued to sell for $129 or less after AirPods 3’s release.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the AirPods 4 should replace both models, with the base version replacing the AirPods 2 and the mid-range model replacing the AirPods 3. Both models will have a similar design. However, again, the mid-range version of AirPods 4 will have active noise cancellation, while the base version of AirPods will not. It’s also worth noting that the mid-range AirPods 4 should not be confused with the AirPods Pro 3, which Gurman claims won’t be updated until the end of the year.
According to preliminary data, it is also known that AirPods 4 will most likely support a USB-C connector, and the basic version will not have wireless charging, while the mid-range model will support it. Apple followed this strategy with both AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, so it makes sense that it will continue it now. As for the name of the headphones, according to rumors, “AirPods 4” is still a preliminary, working name.
