When Meta✴ (then Facebook✴) announced a VR version of the cult action movie GTA: San Andreas from Rockstar Games in October 2021, many were intrigued. For a long time nothing was heard about the project, but the company finally broke the silence.

Let’s remember that at the time of the announcement, GTA: San Andreas VR had been in development for “many years” and was planned for release on the standalone virtual reality headset Quest 2. No release date was given.

Over the years, fans have become so tired of waiting for news about the VR version of GTA: San Andreas that they bombarded Meta✴ with questions about the future of the project, including in comments on trailers for other Oculus games, like the fantasy VR action film Behemoth.

«GTA: San Andreas is frozen indefinitely while we focus on other projects. Looking forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future,” the Meta✴ account said under the new Behemoth trailer.

A company representative made a similar statement regarding the status of the VR version of GTA: San Andreas to IGN. Take-Two Interactive (the owner of the rights to GTA) has not yet commented on the situation.

«Take a fresh look at Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas as you experience (re- or first-time) one of the most iconic open worlds in gaming,” read the original announcement for the VR version of GTA: San Andreas.

The postponement of GTA: San Andreas VR for an indefinite period came at a difficult time for Meta✴’s VR endeavors: in the last quarter alone, Reality Labs’ losses approached $4.5 billion. The division’s budget will be reduced by 20% by 2026.
