According to the latest report from analyst agency Canalys, 8.8 million computers with artificial intelligence capabilities were shipped to the market in the second quarter of 2024. These systems are available in the desktop and laptop segments and are equipped with special dedicated hardware units (NPU) to solve AI problems.

According to Canalys, AI-enabled PC shipments accounted for 14% of all PCs shipped in the second quarter. Experts note that all major processor manufacturers have released AI-enabled chips, so significant growth in AI-enabled PC shipments is expected in the second half of 2024 and beyond. According to analysts’ forecasts, by the end of this year, about 44 million AI-enabled computers will be supplied to the market, and in 2025 this figure will grow to 103 million.
Nowadays, Apple boasts the most diverse range of computers with AI support, which uses proprietary M-series processors equipped with a special neural engine for performing AI tasks across its entire line of computers.
In the Windows segment, cumulative growth in shipments of AI-enabled computers was 127% compared to the previous quarter. However, Windows computers accounted for only 40% of the total volume of AI-enabled PCs released.
As examples, Canalys cites the world’s leading PC vendor, Lenovo, which launched the Yoga Slim 7x and ThinkPad T14s laptop models powered by the latest Snapdragon X Elite AI processors, helping to increase the share of AI PCs in its quarterly shipments to approximately 6%. Of HP’s total PC shipments, the share of AI-enabled systems was 8%. This includes laptop models such as the Omnibook X 14 and EliteBook Ultra G1 based on Snapdragon X Elite processors, as well as models based on Intel Core Ultra processors. As for Dell, of its total shipments, computers with artificial intelligence support accounted for just under 7%. The manufacturer, in particular, has released new models of laptops from the XPS, Latitude and Inspiron series.
So far, AI support is expanding primarily only in the premium segment with systems costing more than $800. Here, in the second quarter, there was a 9% increase in shipments of PCs with AI.
