As noted in the press release, MSI’s history, founded in 1986, is one of perseverance and flexibility. MSI gained recognition with the release of motherboards and video cards, after which it began producing ready-made systems, including laptops.

MSI’s first laptop, the M510C, was released in 2004. In 2009, expecting that portable and lightweight laptops would soon dominate the market, MSI developed the X340, the thinnest laptop to date. But the rapid growth in popularity of smartphones and tablets radically changed consumer habits, which ultimately led to a change in MSI’s strategy that determined the future of the company.

The challenges prompted MSI to rethink what consumers really wanted. Eric Kuo, MSI’s executive vice president and general manager of the laptop division, recalls that the game World of Warcraft was extremely popular at the time, and one day, while attending an overseas LAN party, he and his staff noticed that gamers were bringing heavy PCs to the event .

What these gamers really needed was a high-performance computer in a compact form factor, MSI decided and focused on developing high-quality gaming laptops. By prioritizing the needs of gamers and optimizing the devices, MSI began releasing one successful model after another. This strategy became the basis of success: by 2015, the company had the largest global market share in the gaming laptop segment.

According to Derek Chen, vice president of sales and marketing of MSI laptops, entering the gaming market has become a serious test in terms of internal transformation of the company. To convince employees that “gaming is the future,” numerous lectures and trainings were held, allowing everyone to understand the gaming atmosphere and social media trends. This was different from the traditional approach to computer research and development, but thanks to it, the company’s employees got comfortable and even started streaming and communicating with gamers online. This, in turn, helped create a clear understanding of MSI’s brand positioning among consumers.

Derek emphasized the critical importance of consumer research and proper market assessment when designing and creating a product. MSI does everything in-house, from concept development and software and hardware design to manufacturing in-house. This integrated approach allows for rapid adjustments to product characteristics based on feedback, always prioritizing consumer input, which has become a key factor in the company’s success.

Among his latest projects, Derek highlighted his collaboration with Mercedes-AMG, which resulted in the creation of the Stealth 16 Mercedes-AMG Motorsport A13V laptop, “embodiing both brands’ commitment to excellence,” which has received consumer recognition and won numerous awards. MSI also recently released Claw portable gaming consoles in a compact form factor that allows you to play comfortably in any environment.

For four years in a row, MSI has been named the best laptop brand in PC Mag’s Readers’ Choice poll. In addition to gaming laptops, MSI is working in other areas to expand its activities. Thus, laptops for content creators of the Creator series and Business & Productivity series for corporate users were presented, each of which has its own features focused on the intended use cases.
