Last month, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman reported that Apple was developing a new version of the inexpensive Apple Watch SE with a plastic case, suggesting that this was done to reduce the cost of the wearable device. And this week in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman wrote that Apple is using plastic to make the Apple Watch SE “more suitable for children,” adding that it “may provide a better color gamut.”
Currently, the Apple Watch SE is offered for $249, while Samsung’s cheapest competitor, the Galaxy Watch FE, sells for $199.
Let us recall that in 2013 Apple released the iPhone 5C smartphone with a plastic case in various bright colors, which was a modified version of the iPhone 5. The new product caused a mixed reaction among users, some of whom argued that the plastic case was a step back compared to the attractive metallic finish of previous models, and some consumers said the price of the device was too high for a product that was perceived as low quality.
In turn, The Verge resource believes that the company can choose fresh color options for children’s plastic smart watches Apple Watch SE, making them even more attractive, despite the use of cheaper materials. At the same time, the resource expressed concerns that, in an effort to provide a more affordable price, the company could significantly reduce the functionality of the device.
