As recently became clear from a Canalys report, Apple lost its place in the top five largest smartphone vendors in the Chinese market for the first time last quarter, allowing local players to completely control the top five lines of the ranking. According to Chinese official statistics, in China, shipments of smartphones of foreign brands in June grew by only 10.9% year-on-year.
This was reported by Reuters with reference to a report by the Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT). In June of this year, smartphone shipments to the Chinese market as a whole increased year-on-year by 12.5% to 24.91 million units. At the same time, the volume of supplies of smartphones of foreign brands increased only by 10.9% to 2.87 million units. The increase in this area was less than in previous months. In particular, in April and May, foreign products increased by more than 40% on the Chinese market.
Apple is the largest foreign supplier of smartphones to the Chinese market, so the slowdown in shipments of foreign products in this segment can be largely explained by a decrease in demand for iPhone from Chinese buyers. Like Canalys statistics, IDC data indicate a deterioration in the iPhone’s position in China for the entire second quarter. In the first case, the drop was 6.7%, in the second there was an increase of 1.5%, but Apple’s share decreased over the year from 16.6 to 15.8%.
