AMD introduced an improved frame generator Fluid Motion Frames 2 to improve FPS in any game

AMD announced its second generation frame generation technology – Fluid Motion Frames 2 (AFMF 2). The first version of the technology was announced and released long before the release of the complex image scaling technology FSR 3.0. AMD decided to develop AFMF as an independent feature that does not require support from game developers.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames are part of the HYPR-RX technology stack included in the Radeon Driver. This set of software is designed to improve gaming performance with the click of just one button in the driver settings. Gamers can also use AFMF without HYPR-RX and enable it through game settings, if available.

According to AMD, the new version of its Fluid Motion Frames 2 frame generation technology has undergone optimization work and added several new manual settings. AI algorithms are responsible for improving the quality of generated game frames. AFMF 2 also provides lower latency and higher performance compared to the previous version of the technology. The company also notes that AFMF 2 now has support for games with Vulkan and OpenGL, which the original version of the technology did not have.

AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 is not yet part of the official Radeon driver. AMD released AFMF 2 as a preview version as part of a special driver. The latter can be downloaded from this link. AFMF 2 also supports new settings profiles with preset image quality or performance. For example, a Search Mode has appeared, which is responsible for the smooth generation of frames. AFMF is automatically disabled in highly dynamic game scenes to ensure maximum image quality. Automatically re-enabling AFMF may cause a slight lag. Search Mode is designed to reduce this lag. The mode has three types of settings: Auto, Standard and High. The latter performs best at resolutions of 1440p and higher. Standard settings work best at 1080p resolution

According to AMD, AFMF 2 combined with Anti-Lag technology in Cyberpunk 2077 reduces latency by 28%. On the integrated Radeon 780M graphics of the Ryzen 7 8700G processor, Counter-Strike 2 with AFMF 2 and Anti-Lag 2 reduces latency by 12% compared to the previous version of the technology. At the same time, in 1080p resolution with high quality settings, the “embedding” provides more than 120 frames per second.

AFMF 2 still only supports discrete Radeon RX 7000 and RX 6000 graphics cards, and integrated graphics from Ryzen 7000 series processors and later. There is no support for older graphics architectures.

AMD plans to make AFMF 2 part of the official Radeon driver in the fourth quarter of this year.
