HMD Global has officially unveiled the Skyline smartphone. The new product borrows the design of the legendary Nokia N9 model based on the MeeGo operating system. The new device runs Android 14. The company promises two years of OS updates and three years of security updates for it.
HMD Skyline is the brand’s most powerful device. Another feature of the new product is its high maintainability. For example, replacing a cracked screen or dead battery will take less than 10 minutes. The back cover of the smartphone is mounted on screws that can be easily unscrewed. Replacement parts for the device will be available in the iFixit store.
The HMD Skyline smartphone has a 6.5-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. The display has a peak brightness of 1000 cd/m2 and supports displaying content in HDR10 format.
The device is powered by a mid-range Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 processor. The smartphone offers 8 or 12 GB of RAM, as well as 128 or 256 GB of permanent memory. In addition, there is a slot for microSD memory cards up to 512 GB.
On the front side of the smartphone there is a 50-megapixel camera with autofocus. It can shoot video in 1080p resolution at 30 frames per second. On the back of the device there is a 108-megapixel main camera with optical stabilization, a 13-megapixel module for wide-angle shooting, and a 50-megapixel telephoto camera with support for 2x optical and hybrid digital zoom. The main camera of the HMD Skyline claims to support video shooting in 4K at 30 frames per second.
The device is powered by a 4600 mAh battery with support for 33 W fast charging and 15 W Qi2 wireless charging. There is also 5W reverse charging. The smartphone is equipped with a multifunctional side button to access applications and functions. In addition, the device received a 3.5 mm audio output and an NFC module. HMD Skyline also offers support for Detox Mode, which allows you to quickly turn off notifications or social media access.
The HMD Skyline costs $499. However, the package does not include the same 33 W charger. It will have to be purchased separately. The company also offers a 30W dual-port adapter.
Since the device is highly maintainable, users will be able to purchase spare parts for it themselves. For example, the smartphone display is priced at $95, the battery cover is $30, the battery itself is $25, and the charging port is $20. However, for DIY repairs, it is also recommended to purchase the necessary tool kit, which is offered by iFixit for $5.
