The expansion of the business of Chinese smartphone manufacturers will sooner or later lead to the need to settle all disputes in the field of patent law with the holders of the largest patents in the industry. That’s exactly what happened between Oppo and Ericsson recently, as the companies entered into a multi-year 5G cross-licensing agreement.

Under the terms of this agreement, the Chinese manufacturer will pay Ericsson a royalty on each device sold that supports the 5G communication standard. The companies will also conduct joint activities in the field of testing equipment and promoting it on the market. Oppo representatives emphasized that the company is committed to friendly negotiations in the field of patent law on the basis of mutual respect and fair assessment of intellectual property. Ericsson noted that it will use the funds received as license payments to develop new fundamental technologies in the field of telecommunications.

A few months ago, Oppo entered into a similar agreement with the Finnish company Nokia, which also holds key patents in the field of 5G networks. The latter also extended the corresponding licensing agreements with Samsung, Apple and Honor. Let us note that based on the results of the second quarter of this year, based on IDC statistics, Oppo shared fourth place with Vivo in the global smartphone market, so ensuring comfortable legal conditions for carrying out its activities is very important for it.
