A month before the presentation, almost everything is already known about the Google Pixel 9 family of smartphones. Another leak brought specifications and photographs of all four models. At the same time, it was confirmed that the folding smartphone Pixel 9 Pro Fold received a new design, improved cameras and a more capacious battery, although it will still have problems with autonomy.
According to Ars Technica, the presentation of the Pixel 9 is expected on August 13, but thanks to the certification of devices by regulatory authorities, in particular the Taiwan National Communications Commission (NCC), we can already see photos of all four models: Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Data on the size, weight, battery life, charging speed of the devices also became known, and they also appeared in the photo in disassembled form.
The NCC photos confirm information previously available from renderings and prototype shots: the Pixel 9 Pro will be the same size as the base model, but will feature three cameras and improved specs, possibly geared towards using AI. The NCC documents do not reveal all the specifications, such as the amount of RAM, which according to previous leaks will be an impressive 16 GB for the Pixel 9 Pro. However, Google previously noted that some generative AI models will require a lot of RAM to operate.
The Pixel 9 and 9 Pro will have a 4,558 mAh battery, while the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL will have a 4,942 mAh battery, according to NCC documentation. That’s a slight increase over the base Pixel 8 for the smaller models, and roughly identical to the Pixel 8 Pro for the larger one. Charging speeds will remain roughly the same as the Pixel 8.
Significant changes have affected the Pixel 9 Pro Fold relative to the current Pixel Fold. Its external display has become more elongated in shape. The cameras are now located in a square block, the front camera on the internal screen has moved to the corner. The bezels around the screen are thinner and the crease is less noticeable, and interestingly, the new Fold can fold completely, unlike the previous model, which had a noticeable gap.
The battery capacity of the new Pixel 9 Fold will be 4560 mAh – slightly less than the previous model. Ars Technica’s review of the Pixel Fold noted that Google was able to integrate the largest battery in this category, but battery life remains an issue for foldable smartphones because using the large OLED screen to watch videos or play games drains the battery faster than tablets with similar diagonal, but twice the battery capacity.
All four Pixel smartphones will come with support for the Thread wireless protocol as well as Ultra Wideband (UWB), with the exception of the base Pixel 9. The new smartphones will come with Google’s new 45W charger.
